ITSLIQUID Group, in collaboration with Venice Events and ACIT Venice – Italian-German Cultural Association, is proud to announce the astonishing success of BORDERS Art Fair 2020 that occurred in Venice at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space and at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, from July 23 to August 21, 2020, with the participation of more than 120 artists from more than 30 countries.

Never as this time the concept of the exhibition seemed to be epochal: since several months, the humankind coexists at a distance to stay closer. The new invisible borders generated by the covid-19 are creating new ways of living everyday life, new human connections, re-thinking common spaces and entire cities. Could the new “borders” be the solution? We invited artists, architects and designers to be inspired by this new era, exploring the connection between desires, needs, fears that brings humankind to change, to transform and to evolve our inner world: the answers have been impressive!

The first appointment of BORDERS Art Fair 2020 is divided into two sections: BODIES+CITIES SKINand Venice International Art Fair 2020.

BODIES+CITIES SKIN is about the humankind, that wants to wear his city like a second skin without borders or limits. City’s body is in constant evolution. It changes its skin and shows a renewed body. This mutation follows the direction of human being development and it is a clear and true statement of cities changing time. From borders as individual bodies and souls to boundaries of cities in which we live, each line delimitates a surface and could be the starting point to something new, undiscovered. Limits are everywhere, barriers keep us inside or outside spaces and societies. Their passing creates a crossover of identities and urban environment. The way we move, we relate to anything, to the world make us go beyond boundaries.

Venice International Art Fair 2020 analyzes the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary time, through two main sections: LIQUID ROOMS and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.

This time ITSLIQUID Group had to re-think the openings of the events to prioritize the safety of the people involved: all day long groups of artists, photographers, video makers, architects, collectorsand art lovers have succeeded one another to visit the exhibition spaces respecting the restrictions given by our government and enjoying in any possible way the art event. In this peculiar moment, we took the opportunity to create a stronger connection between the visitors and the artists, who shared their visions and their inner world.

On July 23 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space, among the artists Digi Chivetta talked about her personal “Sea Deamon”, which ensnared her in a slow-motion fight for her life and that she was fighting back with everything she had. For Cecilia Álvarez, self-taught Mexican plastic artist, and for Louise De Buck, from Belgium, imagination, fantasy, magic, aesthetics and emotions are combined in the subconscious with the experiences of reality, thus creating a unique version of life. Patricia Petapermal, half French half Indian, dedicated herself to paint every kind of figure (animal, human, nature) to underline the contrasts and the direction humakind is taking. Raf Tarnawski creates the lightening rods to diffuse stress and an escape route from daily desolation: his sculptures are vessels that are filled with emotions and desires, the joy of encounter, heat of the setting sun, or yearning for what might be. He wants to bring order and understanding of basic values that comes from aesthetics and beauty.

On July 24 in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the doors opened at 10AM and throughout the day, visitors have been amazed by the wonderful location and the curious stories of the artists: Brigitte Van Laethum, born and raised in Belgium, has been a professional decorative painter worldwide, for over 25 years. Since a few months she expresses her profound beliefs by painting on canvas. Using mixed media, acrylic and oil on various supports, she aims to express the pain and suffering of Jesus as it is reflected in the abandonment of the Christian faith in our modern materialistic society. Lidea Hajjarfell for the acrylic abstracts, where she finds her hand wandering over the canvas, evoking lots of emotions, and emanating unlimited expressions, especially in a style of her own she called “Limitless Limit”. The works of Eva Marc’h are characterized by the “figurative abstract”: she wants to favorite spontaneity, that reveal the unconscious and provide constructive messages to the individual and collective consciousness. Jolanda Steenvoorden, on the other side, doens’t give an explanation of her works: she wants the viewers to be inspired by her creations and to have its own opinion about them. Last, but not least, Blair Treuer explores into the role Native American traditional cultural practices and beliefs plays in shaping the way her family sees itself collectively, the role it takes in shaping the personal identities of her husband and her nine children, and the influences or effect it’s had on her own personal identity. As a white woman, the only non-native person in her immediate family, her work is about her reflections as an outsider and about the emotional rollercoaster she often rides as she stands fixed on the outside, but privileged enough to look in. This portrait series is not just about the pieces of Ojibwe culture she’s been allowed to see, but also what it’s allowed her to see within herself, and even to recognize what cannot be found there.

This enchanting atmosphere has been made even more magical by the live piano concert of Letizia Michielon, teacher at the Music Conservatory of Venice, introduced by the President of ACIT Venice Mrs Nevia Pizzul-Capello, who played two sonatas of Ludwig Van Beethoven, that accompained gently the end of the opening days.

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is an historical building dated back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furnitures that enrich its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to held some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
